Bed Bug Treatment

Around 1950 bedbugs were thought to be eradicated. The pesticide DDT was very effective at eliminating the bugs (as well as other insects). The decline in the bed bug population was thought to be due to improvements in the way people lived such as personal hygiene and the pesticide DDT.

Due to concern with the use of DDT, it was banned as an insecticide, this combined with a developing resistance to DDT in bedbugs, caused infestations to increase in number. In fact, a recent study by the University of Kentucky shows that bed bugs have widespread resistance to DDT.

Increases in the number of bedbugs is a global problem, thought to be widely spread by travelers carrying the bugs from one hotel and home to the next. Today, information on bedbugs is critical for all homeowners as there is a double digit increase in reported cases in many countries around the world. Cincinnati has recently been ranked as the #1 City for Bed bugs.

Bed bugs are very sensitive to heat and are rapidly killed when exposed to temperatures over 120°. When heat is used to kill the bed bugs, it needs to happen as fast as possible or the gradual temperature increase will cause the bugs to scatter and possibly lead to further infestation, such as to the room next door or the floor above, etc.

When using heat to control your infestation, remember that some material is more resistant to heat than others, such as your mattress or couch; if they are in there, the temperature may not be as hot as the surrounding area.

Also be aware that some items will explode, such as aerosol can which state on the label of the container to not store them in temperatures greater than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Contractors Materials Company and MMI of Kentucky use our Dry-Air heating units to give you the fast heat required to kill bed Bugs.
